Fixing garbled text console (NVidia)

Colorful garbage on your screen when exiting X window or switching from X to a text console:

If you have (K)Ubuntu 10.04 then add this line to the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Option "RegistryDwords" "UseVBios=0"

If you have an older version of Kubuntu or Ubuntu then add this line to /etc/modprobe.d/options:

options nvidia NVreg_UseVBios=0

This problem occurs with the GeForce Go 6200 series with turbo cache.
