Popping / clicking sound (>=12.04)

On my Sony Vaio a loud popping sound comes from the speaker everytime audio is played. This has something to do with power saving on Intel HDA sound chipsets. This link describes the solution:

In short, become root (sudo su) and edit the file /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/intel-audio-powersave:

  • Comment out this line using a hash sign (#) at the beginning:
    INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}

  • Below that add a line:
    INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=false

Then, execute the following commands:

echo 0 > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save
echo N > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save_controller
chmod -w /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save
chmod -w /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save_controller
